A play about Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, who led an Irish and Spanish alliance against the English in an attempt to drive them out of Ireland.  Archbishop Lombard is writing the life of  O’Neill, but what he seeks is neither ‘interpretation’ nor ‘fact’ but ‘the best possible narrative’.

Description

First production: Guildhall, Derry, 20 September 1988

Act One (Before Kinsale): A large room in O’Neill’s house in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, August 1591.

Act Two (After Kinsale): The edge of a thicket in the Sperrin mountains, Co. Tyrone and O’Neill’s apartment in Rome in 1614.

A cynical reminder that all historians are revisionists, this play hints at a fundamental similarity between the recorder and the maker of events.
